Printmaking
Most people are familiar with commercial printing, such as books, posters, fabrics, and wallpaper. However, many may not know much about the history of printmaking or the ancient and modern methods embraced by fine artists over the centuries.
The earliest known example of printmaking is a hand-printed woodblock on silk dating back to the Han Dynasty in China, around 206 BC to 220 AD. The first print on paper was made in China during the 7th century. Initially, printmaking involved carving a small wood board, inking it, and then hand-printing.
Today, artists use various surfaces to create fine art prints. Many produce limited, hand-made prints to make their art more affordable and accessible to a broader audience. Printmaking also has a personal appeal; the medium presents unique challenges and inevitable unpredictability. As a result, perseverance is essential in this art form.
Popular printmaking methods today include linoleum and woodcut printing, drypoint, etching, stone lithography, monotype, serigraphy, collagraph, solarplate etching, and cyanotype. We are grateful to the artists who have made printmaking an exciting and collectible art form, including Japan's Katsushika Hokusai, Albrecht Dürer, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol.
